International thought leaders and top business entrepreneurs mark record-breaking first day of Cloud Expo Asia at HKCEC

16 May 2018

Hong Kong, 16 May 2018 – North Asia’s largest technology event, Cloud Expo Asia and Data Centre World Hong Kong welcomed a record number of technology professionals today as it opens for its highly-anticipated third edition at the HKCEC.

The industry leading events were opened by the Honourable Ir Allen Yeung, JP, Government Chief Information Officer, The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). Addressing audiences on the Techerati Keynote stage, the government official spoke of the remarkable growth of the events, which mirrors Hong Kong’s dedication to cloud and digital transformation initiatives.

Mr Yeung noted Hong Kong’s world-class IT infrastructure and the commitment of local businesses to become more agile and exploit the full potential of the cloud – with over 70% of organisations in the region already making use of new, innovative cloud services.

The co-located events drew in thousands of international visitors on the first day alone, from key sectors such as healthcare, finance, retail and logistics. Visitors were able to enjoy access to the North Asia’s most extensive supplier exhibition and a world-leading conference agenda.

With the event covering the entire technology ecosystem, from the largest data centres down to the smallest sensors that populate the smart cities of the future, record numbers of senior decision makers from organisations such as DBS Bank, JP Morgan, Lane Crawford, Hong Kong Police Force, Shangri La Hotels and Thomson Reuters were in attendance at the HKCEC.

Norikazu Takahashi, Board Director at The Center for Financial Industry Information Systems Japan – a speaker and VIP delegate at the event noted: "The conference sessions are very interesting and provide realistic case studies. All of the questions and answers are very practical and useful for the audience."

Recognising the importance of cross-industry collaboration and discussion, the show is prioritising a number of key streams. These include a focus on real-world applications of rapidly emerging technologies such as, artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain and DevOps.

With huge media buzz and industry interest in these developments, today speakers and panels had the opportunity to discuss how they are being put into practice in real situations, with use cases and testimony from the people on the frontline of innovation.

This included discussions such as ‘Gearing up Hong Kong in the Digital Era’, delivered by Leo Liu, General Manager from Alibaba Cloud Hong Kong, Macau and Korea. He explained, to a packed crowd, that ‘to cloud or not to cloud’ is no longer the question, but rather that enterprises are now using cloud to drive their business and empower traditional processes. Liu noted a particular project of interest with Pacific Coffee which looks to transform its offline business into an online empire.

The exhibition floor also welcomed great interest and commercial activity, with a selection of some of the world's leading technology companies, including Alibaba Cloud, AWS, Datto, Eaton, Google Cloud, HKT, IBM, Intel DCM, Oracle, Rackspace, SAP, Schneider Electric, Sophos and Vertiv.

Kenneth Chan, Regional & Channel Marketing Manager at Viavi spoke of a successful first day at Data Centre World's Live Data Centre feature: "We’ve seen many visitors and enquiries today at the Live Data Centre. The showcase is particularly useful for us as buyers are attracted to the live implementation and demonstration of data centre products. Through the Live Data Centre, we met a number of new potential customers, technical experts and senior decision makers."

Candice Wong, Event Director, at CloserStill Media, the organiser behind the event, said: "Today has demonstrated the dedication that our international audience has for technology and driving their business growth in our now hyperconnected world. It has been a fantastic first day and I look forward to welcoming our visitors, partners and exhibitors, to another successful day tomorrow."
